General information about Prerequisites and the SPI Examination Requirement
General Prerequisites: ARDMS currently offers several prerequisites under which to apply for an ARDMS examination. First-time applicants must select a prerequisite under which they want to apply for an ARDMS specialty examination and/or the Sonography Principles & Instrumentation (SPI) examination. Each prerequisite requires (1) the appropriate educational background, (2) necessary clinical ultrasound or vascular experience and (3) required documentation that must be submitted with the application. All three components of the prerequisite must be met before an application can be approved.

SPI Examination Requirement: The Sonography Principles & Instrumentation (SPI) Examination Requirement was developed as a pathway for those who cannot meet ARDMS clinical examination prerequisites. To view the SPI Examination Requirement chart, click here. The SPI Examination Requirement allows students to apply for the SPI examination prior to graduation. The SPI Examination Requirement cannot be used when applying for a specialty examination (e.g. AB, OB/GYN, AE, VT). Please see the "Notes About the SPI Examination Requirement" section below for additional information.
Notes about the SPI Examination Requirement: If you were approved to sit for the SPI examination under the SPI Examination Requirement, you are considered a first-time applicant and will need to apply under an ARDMS-listed prerequisite in order to sit for an ARDMS specialty examination(s).
Re-applicant: If you are applying for certification in a new specialty area, you must be sure to have a valid CV form on file. If you do not, you must submit an original completed ARDMS CV form in the applied for specialty area. All CV forms are valid for one year following the date of signature. Please include your ARDMS number on all supporting documentation. Prerequisites do not apply to re-applicants.
