How do take an ARDMS a Practice Examination?

Click on the practice examination link on the Practice Examination page. Fill out the online form and select the appropriate examination from the drop down menu and click proceed. You will then be prompted to fill out payment information.

If you are having problems, please check the following:

  • Are you using AOL? If so you will need to access CATGlobal.com using Internet Explorer.
  • Are you at a college, school, or work? If so you are probably going through a firewall and will not be able to login successfully from the location in which you are at.
  • If you are at home you will need to disable the firewall before logging in.
  • Are you using popup blockers? If so you will need to disable all popup blockers before logging in.

How many questions are there on the Practice Examination?

Each ARDMS practice examination is 30 questions in length.

Can I take the Practice Examination from any computer?

Yes, as long as you follow the system requirements outlined below. Be sure to read the AOL/third party browser tips.

What system requirements are needed for the Practice Examination?

  • WINDOWS: equipment/software requirements
    • Microsoft Windows 95, 98, NT 4.x, or 2000 operating systems

    • Mac Operating Systems 8.6, 9.04, 9.1, or 10
    • Modem with an Internet connection speed of 56K bps or high speed connection (recommended)

  • AOL/third party browser tips
    • If you are using AOL or another 3rd party browser—other than Internet Explorer (IE) or Netscape (7.1 or higher versions) occasionally internet communication problems arise. The best solution in this case, is to minimize the 3rd party browser and open a new browser window using Internet Explorer (IE — the big blue E) or Netscape in order to facilitate online testing.
    • Some schools or businesses may have firewalls installed that interfere with the ability to connect with the computer system. In this case, you may have to register from another computer that does not have a firewall.

Please NOTE: If you attempt to register in the middle of the night, the server may be updating itself and therefore may be unavailable.

Do ARDMS Practice Examinations show me which questions I got wrong?

No, once you have completed the practice examination, you will receive a pass or fail score.

Is the Practice Examination scored?

A score report will appear at the end of the test each time you take it. The number of correct answers for each test section is calculated in the score report.

How much does an ARDMS Practice Examination cost?

Each ARDMS practice examination is $25 USD and payable via credit card.

Are there different versions of the ARDMS Practice Examinations?

Yes. The specialty examinations (abdomen, breast, etc...) have a pool of question that the practice examination draws from to create the 30-question examination. Therefore, each time you take the practice examination, you will receive a different set of 30 questions. The Sonography Principles & Instrumentation (SPI) examination  has two versions for the online practice examination (SPIa and SPIb).  The SPI practice examination includes Advanced Item Types (AIT) questions which assess a candidate in practice setting formats.   The two SPI versions (SPIa & SPIb) contain completely different questions. Unlike other ARDMS practice examinations, the questions on the SPI practice examinations do not change.

I cannot start the examination. What should I do?

The exam opens in a separate “pop-up” window. Do you have a pop-up blocker? If there is any software or program on your computer that blocks “pop-up” windows, you will need to disable it. Some Anti-Virus and Firewall programs also block pop-ups.

It is taking a very long time to load the next question. What’s wrong? What should I do?

It sometimes takes a few seconds to load a question. If it takes too long, press F5 to refresh the screen.

I received an error message stating I have exceeded the maximum time allowed for a question. What should I do?

After 20 minutes without activity, the web server will drop a user’s session. Just close the test window — DO NOT “QUIT” — and then close the browser. Go back to where you logged in and click on “View Schedule” and then “Resume.” This should bring you back to the location of the question when you timed out.

Make sure your monitor resolution is set to 800x600. To check your monitor resolution, open your control panel and choose “Display.” On the Settings tab, under Screen area, drag the slider to the correct resolution and click “Apply.” If you’re using a Mac, click the apple icon in the upper left-hand corner of your screen and then choose “Control Panels.” From there, choose “Monitor;”. Choose the screen resolution from the display options in the window.
