Once you are ready to apply for an ARDMS examination, follow the steps below:

  1. Log in to MY ARDMS and choose the online application option.
  2. Complete the online application form and submit payment. If you are a first-time applicant, you are required to choose a prerequisite under the prerequisite chart under which to apply. See Prerequisites & Eligibility Requirements below.
  3. Gather the required supporting documentation.
  4. Submit your supporting documentation for receipt within 21 days of applying online. Review of your application can take up to five business days from receipt of documentation in the office.

For more details, please visit Get Certified to select the specialty examination you wish to apply under.

Once we have reviewed your information, we will email you with either an Examination Confirmation Letter (ECL) or a request for additional documentation. When you receive the ECL, you may contact Pearson VUE to schedule an examination appointment during your eligibility period. The eligibility period will be available on your ECL.

If you are found ineligible to take the examination, your application will be partially refunded (less the $100 USD processing fee per examination) and your documentation will be mailed back to you.

 CV Forms

In the rare instance when an applicant may be unable to obtain the required signature for the standard CV form, the applicant may send a written appeal to ARDMS providing full details as to why he or she has been unable to obtain the signature of an ARDMS-registered sonographer or vascular technologist certified in the appropriate specialty. The appeal should consist of a letter from the applicant requesting an exception CV form for the appropriate specialty,  and the reason(s) for that appeal.

ARDMS will consider the following reasons as appropriate arguments for appeals:

     1.  Local facilities do not have appropriate ARDMS-registered sonographers/vascular technologists,
and other institutions are too far away from the applicant for a reasonable commute
     2.  The number of qualified sponsoring sonographers/vascular technologists in the applicant's
           region is relatively low.

All written CV signature appeals will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Appeals will be considered based on full documentation of the reason for the appeal and the undue hardship of obtaining an ARDMS-registered sonographer/vascular technologist sponsoring signature on the standard CV form in the appropriate specialty area.

If the appeal is approved, the applicant is granted an "exception signature appeal". A unique Exception CV Form will be sent to the applicant so that an interpreting physician (must hold a current, valid license to practice in the U.S. or Canada), who has directly observed the applicant perform the necessary skills and has interpreted the applicant's scans, may act as a qualified signatory on the standard CV form.

Applicants interested in requesting an exception should send their letter to: ARDMS, ATTN: CV Form Exceptions, 1401 Rockville Pike, Suite 600, Rockville, MD 20852-1402
