Midwife Sonography Certificate

Thank you for your interest in the ARDMS Midwife Sonography Assessment program.

The ARDMS midwife sonography assessment program originally scheduled for Spring 2016 has been postponed until Spring 2017. Because of the low number of applications, we cannot build a fair and defensible examination for the midwife community. The decision to postpone will allow us to determine the reasons why we had such a low number of applications.

A Midwife Task Force, has been formed to look at examination eligibility requirements and all other aspects of the assessment that may be barriers for midwives to achieve a sonography certification. A second administration of the ARDMS midwife sonography assessment program is also set for Fall 2017.

IMPORTANT ELIGIBILITY & PREREQUISITES INFORMATION: The eligibility requirements and prerequisites for the midwife examination are not available as the taskforce (noted above) is still working to finalize them.   Once eligibility requirements and prerequisites are set, ARDMS will notify the midwife community and post the information here.  Please click the "Sign-up for Updates" button on the right to be added to the email update list. Also, please bookmark this page and check back periodically for updates.

The postponement of the program until Spring 2017 is needed so that we may have the additional time to build the highest quality sonography certification for the midwife community. To get ready for the Spring and Fall 2017 ARDMS Midwife Sonography Assessments you should:

              • Visit www.ARDMS.org/MW and sign-up to receive the latest updates from ARDMS about the Midwife
Sonography Certification. New information about eligibility and other aspects of the examination and
certification will be shared as they are finalized.

              • Visit www.midwife.org for information and resources ACNM has available to help you prepare for the
examination, including updates about workshops, exam simulations and other materials.

              • Watch for updates about the ARDMS Midwife Sonography Assessment program and corresponding
education resources in Quickening and QuickE News.

              • Sign-up for the Pegasus education programs, developed to help midwife practitioners determine their
level of expertise in ultrasound and to prepare canddiates for the ARDMS Midwife Sonography (MW)
                certificate exam.

              • Be sure to have an ongoing study plan to ensure you are ready to take the Spring 2017 Midwife
                 Sonography Certification examination.

If you have questions or would like additional information about the ARDMS midwife sonography assessment program, please call 800-541-9754 extension 1 to speak with an ARDMS customer care representative. For information about education resources, please call ACNM to speak with Eileen Beard at 1-240-485-1842.  ‭(Hidden)‬ Midwife Sonography Examination Overview

The Midwife Sonography examination assesses the knowledge, skills and abilities in the areas of the female reproductive system as well as the fetus in the first, second and third trimesters of pregnancy.

The Midwife Sonography computer-based examination is two hours long and contains 120 multiple-choice questions.

As a windowed examination, scores for the Midwife Sonography computer-based examination will be available approximately 60 days following the close of the administration via MY ARDMS. For more information, review the “Scoring” tab.

Every three years we conduct a Midwife Sonography Job Task Analysis (JTA) and update the Midwife Sonography examination to reflect the frequency and importance of tasks being performed by midwives.

 ‭(Hidden)‬ Image (Case) Submission Overview

After the eligibility requirements have been met and your application has been approved, you can take the computer-based examination and submit your images for the five required cases.  These two final steps may be completed in any order but must be done during the applied-for examination administration period.

Each of the five required cases is comprised of multiple images. The adequacy of each image for clinical decision making will be based on four imaging parameters:  gain, depth, focal zone placement and anatomic landmarks.

Submission of all images in each of the following cases is required:
  •  One GYN case (9 images)
  •  One 1st trimester case which includes 2 crown rump length measurements (8 images)
  •  One 2nd trimester case (7 images)
  •  Two 3rd trimester cases (separate cases - 9 images in each case)

View/download the Midwife Guide for Image Submission for details.

All submissions must be in conformance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). All patient identifiers must be removed.

As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA) principles should be adhered to by using the lowest ultrasound exposure possible to gain diagnostic information. All ultrasound examinations should be medically indicated. In addition, ALARA principles should be followed when adjusting controls that affect the acoustic output power to the fetus. When acquiring fetal heart rates, M-mode must be used instead of Doppler.

 ‭(Hidden)‬ Retake/Resubmit

Pass/Fail Fee Scenarios:

After you have completed both steps during the applied-for examination administration, you will have four different options depending on the outcome of each step.

  1.   You pass both the computer-based examination and the image (case) submission: You will be awarded the Midwife Sonography Certificate.

       2.   You pass the computer-based examination but fail the image (case) submission:

             •    You will have up to 24 months (from receipt of the passing computer-based
examination score) to resubmit your images (cases) without having to retake the
                   computer-based examination.
             •    You will only be able to resubmit your images (cases) during the subsequent
                   application windows (twice a year).
             •    Image (case) resubmission is $200 USD.
             •    If you are unable to pass the image (case) submission during the resubmission(s),
you will be required to retake the computer-based examination and resubmit the
images (cases), paying the full $300 USD examination fee.

         3.  You fail the computer-based examination but pass the image (case) submission:

             •  You will have up to 24 months [from receipt of the passing image (case) submission
score] to retake the written examination without having to resubmit your images
                 (cases).
            •   You will only be able to retake your computer-based examination during the
subsequent application window (twice a year).
            •    Each retake is $200 USD.
            •    If you are unable to pass the written examination during the reattempts, you will
be required to retake the computer-based exam and resubmit the images (cases),
paying the full $300 USD examination fee.

        4.  You fail the computer-based examination and the image (case) submission:
            •    You will be able to begin the computer-based examination and image (case)
submission process again during the next application window, paying the full $300

                  USD examination fee.

Note: Once you receive the passing results for either the computer-based or image (case) submission piece, you will have two years to pass the corresponding piece and earn the Midwife Sonography Certificate. If both pieces are not successfully completed and the certificate is not earned within the two years, any passing scores will be rescinded and you will need to restart the application process.

 ‭(Hidden)‬ Impartiality

The Midwife Sonography Certification assessment is powered by ARDMS. ARDMS functions under policies intended to demonstrate impartiality, high ethical standards and validity of its certification assessments. ARDMS does not restrict Applications, Candidates from becoming a Registrant based on limiting conditions, such as membership of an association or professional society of any organization. ARDMS will not unfairly impede or inhibit access to its certification to Applicants, Candidates or Registrants who meet our stated policies regarding qualification requirements, renewal requirements and/or passing ARDMS’ psychometrically sound certification assessments.

 ‭(Hidden)‬ Maintenance of Certification

The components of the Midwife Sonography Certificate Maintenance of certification (MOC) program are still being developed and will be comprised of the following: annual renewal fee, attestation, CMEs, and recertification. Please check back in June 2016 for updates.

‭(Hidden)‬ Register for the Midwife Sonography Practice Examination

Taking a practice examination is a great way to prepare for your actual computer-based examination. We offer a Midwife Sonography practice examination that simulates the computer interface used in the actual test center environment. The Midwife Sonography practice examination review is comprised of 30 sample questions and is 30 minutes long.

After you complete a practice examination, you will be emailed a report that shows the number of questions you answered correctly. While the report is an indication of your knowledge, the practice tests results should not be used to predict how well you will perform on the actual examination at the test center.

‭(Hidden)‬ Review Our Tips for Examination Day Success

After all of your diligent preparation and hours spent studying, here are a few valuable tips to help make your examination day a success:

    •  Double check that you know where the test center is before examination day and give yourself plenty of time to get there. Remember, you MUST arrive and register at least 30 minutes before the examination begins.
    •  Get a good night's sleep before you take your examination. Being well rested and relaxed when you take your examination will help you concentrate.
    •  Bring one form of current and valid identification that complies with the test center identification requirements.
    •  Travel light. The only thing you can bring into the testing room is you. You can store your personal belongings — your car keys, watch, smartphone, purse, backpack, etc. — in lockers at the test center. The following items are not allowed in test centers: study materials, food, drink, visitors/guests, pets and children.
    •  Request a white board if you plan to jot down notes during the examination. Please note that you must complete the tutorial and accept the Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) prior to writing any notes. Once the 15 minute tutorial is complete there is a five minute window to accept the NDA. If the NDA is not signed within the appropriate window of time your examination ends and you will be escorted out of the testing room,  forfeit your fees and eligibility. Test centers are using white boards (rather than paper) in an effort to "go green."

Good luck!

 ‭(Hidden)‬ Study Materials/Resources

ARDMS does not offer or endorse study materials for our examinations. Please contact the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM) for training materials and additional resources.

‭(Hidden)‬ How Is the Midwife Sonography Case Submission and Examination Scored?

Candidates will need to pass the computer-based examination and the case submission separately in order to earn the Midwife Sonography Certificate.

The Midwife Sonography computer-based examination evaluates the knowledge and skills you must demonstrate as a midwife. The primary test result is a PASS or FAIL decision. In addition, you will receive a scaled score, ranging from 300 to 700. A scaled score of 555 is required to pass all ARDMS examinations.

Pass/Fail Fee Scenarios:

    •  If you pass the computer-based examination but the fail image (case) submission, you will have the opportunity to resubmit images (cases) during the next administration. If you fail the image submission again, you must redo the entire process; pay $300 for application and written examination, pay $200 for case resubmission.

    •  If you fail the computer-based examination but pass image (case) submission, you will have to retake the exam during the next administration; pay $300 for the written examination. If you fail written examination again, you must redo the entire examination process; pay $300 for application and written examination, pay $200 for case resubmission.

    •  If you fail the computer-based examination and the image (case) submission, you will need to start over during next administration; pay $300 for application and written examination, pay $200 for case resubmission.

Note: Once you receive the passing results for either the written or image (case) submission piece, you will have two years to pass the corresponding piece and earn the Midwife Sonography Certificate. If both pieces are not successfully completed and the certificate is not earned within the two years, any passing scores will be rescinded and you will need to restart the application process.

‭(Hidden)‬ How are the Case Submissions Rated?

Images submitted by the candidate shall be evaluated by multiple raters that have been professionally trained.

All submissions must be in conformance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). All patient identifiers must be removed.

As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA) principles should be adhered to by using the lowest ultrasound exposure possible to gain diagnostic information. All ultrasound examinations should be medically indicated. In addition, ALARA principles should be followed when adjusting controls that affect the acoustic output power to the fetus. When acquiring fetal heart rates, M-mode must be used instead of Doppler.

‭(Hidden)‬ How Do I Get My Midwife Sonography Score Report?

Examination results and a full score report will be posted to your secure MY ARDMS approximately two months (60 days) after the close of the examination window. An email will be sent notifying you when score results are posted. The results of your examination are limited to the following:

    •  Pass*
    •  Fail
    •  Cancelled – Candidate cancelled scheduled examination appointment time.
    •  Absent – Candidate arrived late for a scheduled appointment, did not show up for a scheduled appointment or was denied at check-in due to a violation of a stated policy.
    •  Expired – Candidate did not schedule or take the examination within the assigned eligibility period

Candidates receiving a passing score on all required examinations and meeting all other requirements will be awarded a certificate. For information on the scoring methods, visit Notification of Results and Scoring.

If you fail the image (case) submission, you will receive feedback on the images that were rated inadequate. Candidates who do not pass are invited to re-apply.

*Pass status is not indicative of earning the specialty/credential. To obtain a Status Verification letter please log into your MY ARDMS account.

 ‭(Hidden)‬ Computer-based Examination Score Verification

Examination results can not be reviewed until the scores are released, 60 days after the close of the examination administration.

You can request a score verification for a $35 USD fee, payable by check, money order or credit card. Score verification ensures that the computer counted the correct and incorrect answers appropriately, but it does not review the questions and answers.

You must submit the completed Exam Score Verification Form within 30 days of having taken the examination in question. The Exam Score Verification Form will be returned if incomplete, unsigned or unpaid.

When deciding whether to have your score verified, please consider that ARDMS examinations are scored electronically with a high degree of accuracy, and it is unlikely that verification will alter your original score.
