Target Audience

The primary audience for this activity is healthcare providers, some of whom are on the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic, treating patients.

Statement of Need/Program Overview

There is a great need to remind our community that being an effective leader starts with self-care. During this time of COVID-19, the need for self-care is urgent, especially for those on the front lines, so that they can be healthy for themselves, for those whom they care, and for those whom they are expected to lead. One report from the JAMA concludes that, “[s]ignificant associations were observed between leaders’ level of burnout as well as professional fulfillment and their leadership behaviors as assessed by the physicians they led.” Plainly, “[b]urnout, professional fulfillment, and self-care practices of physician leaders appear to be associated with their leadership effectiveness.”

Educational Objectives

After completing this activity, the participant should be better able to:

  • Define personal and institutional resilience and its components
  • Describe how posttraumatic growth differs from resiliency
  • Review seminal research on the topic of resilience
  • Enumerate major factors supporting healthcare providers to promote resilience as individuals and teams
  • Discuss evidence-based approaches for enhancing self-care and increasing resilience
  • Evaluate common pitfalls through case studies and examples of how resilience can change for better/worse
